Reviews: Back to Index

The albums have been graded on the most common grading system used in Finnish schools. Where 4 is the worst, and 10 is the best. The final score for the album is most of the times the average for all of the tracks, though it can also change if the reviewer wishes so. The Super Eurobeat Non-Stop albums will be reviewed as full collections, and the individual songs won't be reviewed, unless they are completely new. Though Euromach and JGTC albums for example will have complete song by song reviews.
The grading system simply goes as ie. 4- (3,75), 4 (4), 4+ (4,25) and 4½ (4,5) and the next one again would be 5-. A simple system we have over here in Finland.
  Super Eurobeat 144

1.Oda - Face To Face (Delta)
Oda is one of the few male vocalists in eurobeat history that I really really like. He has an extremely energetic voice and he has so far picked pretty much only good tracks to perform. This time he doesn't make an exception, Face To Face is probably his best track to date and a perfect start for this album.
Rating : 9

2.Maddy Layne - Do You Wanna Be My Secret Love (HI-NRG Attack)
What I like about HI-NRG Attack is that they seem to pull out these great songs time after time. They just somehow manage to brighten up every album. This makes no mistake, Maddy Layne is a strong performer and this song is probably her best one to date. Nice melody and awesome backgrounds.
Rating : 9

3.Monique - It's A Beautiful Day (A-Beat C)
A nice little song that succeeds in being one of the best Monique songs to date. Great vocals and positive lyrics that will quickly start playing in your head over and over again. What I didn't like about the song is that it's so standard eurobeat with the backgrounds and the lyrics that it doesn't really stick out from the crowd.
Rating : 8

4.Dave Simon - Queen Of My Ecstasy (Time)
This song doesn't really have much in it in my opinion. It has a pretty non-existant melody and the sounds don't have any kick in them at all. Dave Simon's vocal have never been the best ones around and this time he can't improve at all. Time needs to find better male singers for the future.

5.Nuage - I Really Wanna Be Your Magic (A-Beat C)
For some reason all of the Nuage songs to date have been sort of slow to open up for me. At first they all sound really dull or plain bad, this song had that same effect in the beginning, fortunately time had it's golden touch at work again. After a whole lot of reruns the song started to sound good and I began finding more and more nice lil' features from the background and eventually I began to love the song. Not her strongest performance yet, but a good song none the less.

6.Dusty - I Wanna Take A Chance (SCP)
What I like about Dusty is that his voice really sounds a lot like Fastway's (could it be...?). This time I was blown away for the first time by his performance though. The song has a great melody with excellent backgrounds, and the vocals are extremely striking. Where would SEB be without SCP?
Rating : 9+

7.Domino - The Game Of My Name (A-Beat C)
Being a huge fan of Domino's materials I really had high expectations for this song, and this time even my all the time favorite Domino song Tomodachi Big Friend was beaten. The Game Of My Name is probably the best example of how amazing work the people at A-Beat C can produce. The backgrounds with the male vocals work perfectly and Domino sounds pleasant to the ear. A bull's eye.
Rating : 10-

8.Jackson 'O - Freedom (Time)
After two great songs I was preparing for a big downhill with Jackson 'O, I never really was a fan of their materials, but this time they do rather well. The song is packed full of energy and the vocals aren't quite as disturbing as with most of the Jackson 'O songs (though the Michael Jackson 'ow' at the end of the chorus is pretty horrific).
Rating : 7+

9.Kiki & Fancy - Wake Up! (SCP)
Where as my previous praises for SCP went for a whole different reason this time they earn even more praise due to the fact that Kiki & Fancy are featured on Super Eurobeat for the first time. The song is extremely positive, the sounds will get you moving and you'll feel good due to the extremely stupid but catchy lyrics. I really hope to hear more of this kind of material in the future. We've got that feeling alright!
Rating : 10-

10.J. Storm - Gettin' You Gettin' Me (A-Beat C)
From the happy mood of Kiki & Fancy we move to a more rock'y kind of eurobeat and this works rather well. J. Storm sounds like many other eurobeat male vocalists which is definitely a down side for his songs (Perhaps I just don't pay enough attention but to me he sounds like every other A-Beat C male vocalist). The song has a good melody which unfortunately has been labeled all over by the characteristics of A-Beat C songs, it's like sooo many other songs from the label which is not a good thing.
Rating : 7

11.Maria Valentino - Stand Inside My Love (Vibration)
Then on to the fastest song on the album which is also one of the best tracks on the album. Like her previous song Be My Lover this one also is a real treasure. The energetic backgrounds combined with Maria's strong vocals make this song a fine example of how you can make a great eurobeat song even with the basic ingredients.
Rating : 9+

12.Niko It's My Life (Delta)
If you know me at all, you probably also know that I can't stand Niko. His voice is quite irritating and he just seems to be doing the same thing over and over again. I can't deny the fact that he's had a lot of great songs, but I just can't stand them because of his vocals. This time a cover from Bon Jovi is actually though sort of a success. The song at first was plain hideous but after sometime it started to grow on me, and now I can at least say that I don't hate it. Energy is what Niko can offer at least.
Rating : 7-

13.Vanessa - Saturday Morning (Time)
Well Vanessa has been around for as long as I remember and as long as I remember she has been very mediocore. Her songs always sound nice, but still they don't make me crave for more. Saturday Morning is a positive song which has its best moments in the chorus. I like chamomile...
Rating : 7

14.Ace - Moon Child (SCP)
This time I was quite surprised how Ace's voice sounds like. I get a feeling that the vocals go a bit too high for his voice, and it disturbs me everytime he sings Moon Child. The song is also one of the worst ones Ace has performed, this album would've been better off without this one.
Rating : 7-

15.Denise - Music In My Head (Delta)
An amazing intro for a song that really surprised me. I was expecting a common eurobeat song with common eurobeat sounds, well the latter one was true... The song has a really good melody and it slowly grows on you, it's perhaps not as much of a hit as Domino's song for example, but still one of the better songs on the album.
Rating :

16.Matt Land - Night Flight To Tokyo (A-Beat C)
Matt Land, well I won't say anything about his good looks, but this guy can really sing. He is always the one to cheer my darkest nights after hearing many other male vocalists perform. Night Flight To Tokyo continues the long list of amazing songs Matt has done, and even if it's not as much of a classic as Fever The Night, it's definitely an awesome song.
Rating : 10-

17.Donna - Runaway (Delta)
Donna has a pretty nice voice, and so far she has had good songs to perform as well. Runaway isn't as good as some of her previous songs but it has a great chorus which is also the highlight of the song definitely. Great backgrounds make up a lot for this song, the vocals could've been more energetic.

18.Dave & Nuage - Car Of Your Dreams (A-Beat C)
I better keep my mouth shut about Dave Rodgers, I just don't really understand that guy and his status (sure he makes good music, but he should stay behind the mixing table and avoid the mic at all costs). This song though has it's good moments, but they all pretty much are because Nuage is also singing in the song. And really these people should get rid of the car engine effects. Sure it's a song about cars, but still they are so old nowa days. A good ending for the album, would've been better though if Nuage had performed it alone.

Final Words :
Super Eurobeat 144 succeeds in many areas, there's a long list of great songs and there aren't all that many disappointments in the mix. After all of the labels were introduced to Super Eurobeat the level of the albums has clearly increased and of course that's for the best for us fans. Let's just hope Avex keeps up with such high standards as on this album.

Final Score : 8+
